The young soldier felt her
healing rays of light.
She made him forget about his wounds, the terror and fright.
Her sheltering warmth was a soothing oasis of hope.
A haven from the A Shau Valley and Hamburger Hills bloody slope.
She gave him the gift of her tender smile.
She understood his hunger and need for those things so basic and
worthwhile.
Awakened on the morning he was to leave that country so bleak,
at his bedside stood the nurse who gently kissed his cheek.
A last show of affection she was gone before he could say goodbye.
He only caught a glimpse of her and saw tears in her eye.
The young soldier was decorated for heroism and looked at the medals he had won.
He remembered a nurse whose warmth was comforting as the rising sun.
Noble and courageous, her strength was gentleness and compassion.
Her smiles and her tears were not wasted.....for they had touched
his life
In a most splendid and meaningful fashion.

Mr. Jones writes: "This was written for Flight Nurse Dotty
Sullivan, who took care of me at the 22nd Casualty Staging Facility
in Da Nang. I was wounded June 9th, 1969 in the A Shau Valley while
serving with the 101st Airborne Division (A Btry 2/319th Arty). This
was during 'Operation Apache Snow.' I owe Dotty Sullivan
a lifetime of thanks. She gave me the gift of humanity and sensitivity
when I needed it most. This is a poem I wrote in praise of her, before
I found her some 20 years later to say, 'Thank you, and I am
allright.'"
