Grits in full bloom

David and "Bubba" were working clearing the ditch in front of Bubba's property. Beside Bubba's house is a large field of cotton.

They both looked up when a large car with Michigan plates pulled up next to them, and they watched with interest as the passenger's window came down.

"What are those?" asked the woman in the car. She pointed at the field.

David blinked because, as a native Georgian, he had never considered being asked what cotton was. Bubba, who's pretty quick on the uptake, leaned an elbow on the handle of his bush ax, bent over to where he could look the car occupants in the eye and said in his most pronounced drawl, "Why, ma'am, that's a field of grits - in full bloom."

The couple from Michigan thanked Bubba and wished both boys a nice day.

David and Bubba kept straight faces until the car stopped near the edge of the field and the couple got out to photograph the "grits."

That, says David, was where they lost it. "We were rollin' in the ditch laughing. Them Yankees must'a thought we was nuts."

The photograph above was taken near Pridgen, Georgia, on Sunday, November 25th. The roadside for miles around was littered with cotton bolls blown off of wagons on their way to the cotton gin. By the time you read this, the final harvest for cotton will be over in Dixie.
