Fiction

If It Makes You Happy
Jolie Howard

When the handsome stranger walked into the bar, Paula knew instantly that he did not belong. It wasn't just the fancy, Yuppie way he was dressed or the impotent cell phone hanging from his pants loop. He was out of place, and Paula almost dismissed him. Then he asked Paula to choose for him from the unfamiliar music on the jukebox. Shania Twain? Conrad Twitty? Dixie Chicks? He didn't have a clue.

Harry & Maude
T. L. Stone

Maude Clemmons is angry. She stands, blue-veined and shaking, before Harry Pearson. She is waving a skillet, threatening violence. Harry's infidelity is finally out in the open, and Maude's not taking it well at all. (Strong language)

Poetry

Dark Clouds
Gabriella Salas

Kudzu Monthly is pleased to introduce the thoroughly modern poetry of Gabriella Salas to our readers this month. Her poetry involves a range of topics and is powerfully written. Her poetry is effective.

About the Cover Art

Cover art for this issue was provided by Pamela Kimmell. It's an original oil painting of "an old covered bridge out here in Virginia."

Sweet Dreams Are Made of These
Lisa J. Binkley

Our ancestors went to bed when the sun went down. They might have lit the lantern for their nightly Bible reading, but they went to bed knowing that they would be up with the sun. The anxieties and entertainment of modern living have accelerated our days and shortened our nights, and most Americans do not get a healthy amount of sleep. Even worse, some of us have trouble sleeping when we try to. Read this article and let Lisa Binkley lead you on an informative journey to "a good night's sleep."

Awards Banquet
Loren Moore

Loren Moore lives in Arlington, Texas and has been married to his wife, Johnnie, for over fifty years. Fortunately, she's game and didn't grumble too much when Loren submitted this story. Read the first line of it, and you'll appreciate how tolerant Mrs. Moore is.

Nonfiction

Winters in Illinois
Greg Young

Greg Young is a Floridian by way of Texas, California, and Panama, but he grew up in northeastern Illinois. As winter yields to spring all through Dixie, we at Kudzu Monthly thought it would be fun to consider how the less fortunate have to live. In this interesting personal essay, Greg vividly recalls the terrible blizzard of 1967.

The Last Word

We do all this for you, the reader, so thank you for coming and validating our efforts. Thank you for reading Kudzu Monthly. Before you go, there's one more photo for you in the publisher's Last Word segment. (It's a picture of trees reflecting on black water as evening comes to the Okefenokee swamp in southeastern Georgia.)

The Best of the Kudzu Monthly Archives

The last year has seen significant growth in the numbers of Kudzu Monthly readers, and this new feature is to recognize the significant works of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction that have appeared in the past issues - excellent work that newer readers might have missed. These "Best of Kudzu Monthly Achives" features link back to this index page.

La Danse Macabre
Quinn Tyler Jackson

"Dance, divine muse," the old man would say while tapping his cane, and young Elvire Beauregard could do no less. In her heart burned a passion for the ballet - a passion described by the old man as her flame.

Selected Poetry
by Hazel Bell Nicholas

Throughout a long career, Hazel Bell Nicholas has earned almost every accolade that can be accorded to a poet. With this page, we presented some of her favorites.
